New Year’s Resolutions: Not Just for New Year’s

I hate New Year’s resolutions. I can’t remember the last time I stuck to one. Scratch that — I can’t even remember the last time I made one.

Of course I want to lose weight. Of course I want to do more good in the world and make an impact on society. Of course I want to grow more personally and professionally. And of course I want to make more money.

But, why do I have to make this promise to myself on January 1st? Why do I have to plan my goals for the start of each year? Why can’t I just start fresh any time I want? Any time I decide?

And this is why I hate New Year’s resolutions. If you want to make a change in your life, you make that change regardless of the date. Don’t put things off until a new year — start working on it now.

If it’s June 15 and you decide you’re unhappy and you want to make a resolution to change this, don’t wait six months to take action. Take action once you realize you’re unhappy.

“New year near me.” How about new day new me? Or even better — new day, better me? We should be striving to better ourselves, not become new people entirely.

If you want to start fresh, get a good night’s sleep and start fresh in the morning. Don’t assign one day each year to make a resolution and that’s it. Instead, make a resolution every day if you want — doing one small act of good per day is a lot easier and a lot more fulfilling than you may realize.

So let’s┬ástop with the New Year’s resolutions and let’s start making ourselves better and continuing to grow throughout the year. Let’s continue to be the generation that implements changes in the world. And let’s do this by bettering ourselves a little every day.
