Reactions to Fidel Castro’s Death

Author: Mary Grace Donaldson, Current Events/Politics

By now, we’ve all heard that the former, somewhat notorious Cuban Dictator Fidel Castro passed away at age 90, overnight from Friday into Saturday according to a statement from his brother.

I’ve seen a mix of reactions circulating the news as well as social media– some from notable U.S. officials, some from notable world leaders, some from Cuban citizens and of course, one from our President-Elect…

Here are a few highlights:

  • President Obama indicated that his “prayers are with the Cuban people” during this time, and “sent condolences” to Castro’s family
  • Florida Senator and former Republican Presidential candidate Marco Rubio called out President Obama for his failure to mention Castro’s victims
  • Castro’s Cuban-American opposition declared in a statement made on Saturday that “The Tyrant is Dead”
  • The citizens of Little Havana in Miami celebrated Castro’s death in their streets on Saturday afternoon
  • Vladimir Putin mourned Castro and called him a “sincere and reliable friend of Russia”
  • Some Cuban citizens are mourning the loss of their “hometown revolutionary”
  • And finally, Donald Trump tweeted the following: “Fidel Castro is Dead!”

So, how should we feel? A notable world leader is dead – but should we overlook his number of victims and seemingly tyrannical edicts during his tenure as Cuba’s leader? Should we extend sympathy to Cuba as our President has, or should we rejoice in the streets over the news that a “tyrant” is no longer a threat?

While I don’t have one blanket answer to all of those questions, I know one thing for certain: we need to demonstrate kindness toward citizens both mourning Castro and celebrating his demise. Cuban citizens who were loyal to Castro have lost a leader, and those dancing in the streets in Little Havana have good reason for jubilation, possibly as a result of Castro killing family members or tearing families apart. Both sides have reason for their reactions.

As far as the likes of Putin and Trump…I’ll leave that to you to decide.
