And while Trump ascending to the White House is something all Americans should be fearful of, you should also be scared of his running mate, Mike Pence.
Pence, the 57-year-old Governor of Indiana, seems like a perfectly rational and thoughtful human being when juxtaposed with Trump. A deeper dive reveals the truth…
Pence is anti-gay
As Governor of Indiana in 2014, Pence attempted to amend the state’s constitution in order to ban same-sex marriage, but his effort was defeated.
In 2015, Pence signed into law the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which would’ve allowed businesses to discriminate against LGBT customers if they claimed allowing them to be patrons went against their religious beliefs. After a nationwide outcry – including pushback from the NCAA – Pence eventually changed the language in the legislation while claiming the original bill was misunderstood.
He began the crusade to defund Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit that provides women with access to safe abortions, but 96 percent of their services revolve around birth control, emergency contraception, sex education, LGBT services, cervical cancer screening, pregnancy testing, STD treatment, breast cancer screening, and more.
For most conservatives, though, the above facts are ignored while their party fights to defund Planned Parenthood entirely — a crusade that was started by Pence. While Pence and other republicans have been unsuccessful in their efforts to defund Planned Parenthood nationally, Pence has cut funding in Indiana, which led the only HIV testing center in Scott County, Indiana (a Planned Parenthood center that did not offer access to abortions), to close.
He signed an anti-abortion law that was later overturned
In March, Pence’s anti-abortion stance led him to sign a law that would’ve prevented women from getting abortions because of the “race, gender, or disability” of the fetus.
He’s as pro-gun as it gets
Most Republicans side with the NRA in order to easily solicit their support when running for election or re-election, but Pence — who has an A+ rating from the NRA — takes it a step further. He recently signed into law a measure that allows people to keep firearms locked in their vehicles while parked on school property.
In addition to teachers, parents and visitors, students are also allowed to have guns locked in their cars as long as they have permission from their principal. What could possibly go wrong?
Passing anti-gun laws won’t prevent every shooting, but politicians should be doing everything they can to prevent even one senseless death. Instead, Republicans like Pence not only block laws that would prevent those on the terrorist watch list from buying guns, they pass new ones that put Americans in even more danger.
He doesn’t believe in global warming or evolution
It’s hard to know if denying evolution or global warming are things Pence actually believes or things he wants people to think he believes. But it’s awful either way.
Global warming is real and the potential consequences terrifying. Having someone in the White House who isn’t ready to counter it would be quite scary.
When it comes down to it, Pence isn’t temperamentally unfit to hold the office of the President. However, nearly everything else about him leads you to believe that he’d use the power of the office to attempt to impose a radical agenda that would set the country back.
Donald Trump being in possession of the nuclear codes is a terrifying thought, but so is the idea of Mike Pence holding the highest office in the land. Vote wisely.
